CIDOC Fridays Webinar Series: Exploring Image Documentation and Museum Collections Call, Webinar

ICOM CIDOC – International Committee on Museum Documentation  announces the launch of an online seminar series held on the last Friday of each month at 17:00 CET (20.00pm Tbilisi time). Inaugural webinar will explore the theme of Image Documentation.

During the inaugural three-day CIDOC Fridays Webinar series, in collaboration with ICOM Georgia, CIDOC will explore how museum collections’ documentation encompasses both physical attributes and contextual information. This positioning within a knowledge framework is crucial for museum operation. The complexities surrounding the documentation of images—deciding what to document, be it the object, the image, or the object as an image carrier—will be thoroughly examined.

Join us as CIDOC experts present cases and solutions tackling the intricacies of photograph and video documentation, exploring the multiple layers involved.

Session Schedule:

  • 22.03.2024: General introduction to image documentation by Dominic Oldman (Director Kartography CIC)
  • 26.04.2024: Tools and standards available by Jonathan Ward (Senior Editor, J.P. Getty Trust)
  • 24.05.2024: Digital challenges including 3D, AR, VR, AI, digital copies, legalities, authenticity, and other issues by Frank von Hagel (Research Assistant, Institute for Museum Research SPK)

All sessions will be conducted in English.

Before embarking on the documentation of photos and videos, it’s imperative to remember the age-old adage: “Measure twice, cut once.” In other words, meticulous planning can prevent errors and ensure accurate documentation.

CIDOC seminar will explore the fundamentals of documenting audiovisual materials, addressing various questions that arise. Is the essence of the object in visual mediums the physical carrier or the content it holds? Should our focus lie on documenting the portrayed image or the tangible form? How do we distinguish between original and copy? And how can documentation provide answers to these questions?
