We unite to save the heritage of Ukraine

According to the Hague Convention, “Any kind of damage to cultural values, regardless of who owns it, damages the cultural heritage of all mankind.”

To support the Ukrainian museums, Ukrainian colleagues and citizens, ICOM Georgia and the Blue Shield Georgia join Ukrainian counterparts in the Heritage Emergency Response Initiative (HERI), which aims to support cultural heritage protection and post-crisis recovery.

Ukraine is experiencing a major crisis in the field of humanitarian aid and protection of cultural heritage every day since the Russian invasion, along with human losses.

During the armed conflict, irreversible damage has been done to a number of cultural heritage sites; Numerous museums, churches and historic buildings were bombed, damaged and looted. Unfortunately, this list is growing daily …

The amount donated under the HERI initiative will be used to purchase relevant equipment, emergency storage of (digital) collections, improvement of storage spaces and transportation of collections to these spaces and repositories, purchase of materials and tools for evacuation and transportation of collections, urgent fortification of historic buildings, their temporary roofing, removal of damaged windows and doors, and other emergency rescue work.

ICOM Georgia and the Georgian Blue Shield National Committees offer to join the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Preservation Initiative, in which anyone can transfer money to the GEL account of these two committees (if you wish to transfer USD, you can use the HERI Initiative Account Number) and become a part of this initiative.

ICOM Georgia and the Georgian Blue Shield National Committee will ensure the conversion and transfer of funds for the HERI initiative. The following information will be published every Monday: the number of donors, the amount donated in GEL, the amount converted and the document confirming the transfer.

HERI coordinates its activities with the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, UNESCO, ICOM, ICOM-DRMC, ICCROM and other institutions, as well as rescue initiatives in Ukraine and around the world.
